If you look at this short video as an example. It is a relatively simple concept you would think, but you might be surprised at how easy it is to forget when you are actually driving. You might be turning left from a major road into a single track road, or perhaps on to a humped back bridge with only enough width for one car, or perhaps a tight, narrow road with parked cars nearby. You could even be about to emerge left in to the major road but there is a motor bike overtaking a vehicle to your left, on the side of the road that you were about to pull in to. Looking into the new road is a skill. Once you understand why it is important, you just need to effectively practice it, first with help from your instructor and then independently. Eventually it will become second nature to you, you will not even be consciously thinking about it.
This is what it looks like to develop skills so that eventually you are confident and competent to drive anywhere, even unfamiliar roads and still detect when there is more risk and you need to slow down.
At BIG TOM, our goal is to develop the driving skills of our customers so that they can drive in any locations, not just on driving test routes. This is why we receive a high satisfaction rate from our customers who train in many different locations. These types of skills are best developed in an unfamiliar locations, the exact opposite to ‘coaching’ on test routes. Our customers do travel on test routes, but when we are developing driving skills we practice in a variety of places.
